The requirement
What Idaho requires to renew a dealer license
ITD's dealer page: all owners of a used-vehicle or wholesale dealership complete at least 4 hours of annual education, recognized by the department, before the license can be renewed.
Every owner or responsible party listed on the license takes it under their own name — no manager or stand-in may take it for you. Franchised dealers are exempt.
The renewal deadline — and everything that renews with it
Each Idaho dealer license runs from the month you were first licensed through the last day of the month before it, the following year.
At ITD, renewal is $175.00 for the dealer license, plus the $300.00 ICAR fee (wholesale-only dealers are exempt), plus the plate renewal fees on ITD’s current order form. All your dealer plates renew with the license, in one payment. The dealer bond also has to stay in force all year. See the Idaho dealer bond.
Five sales — at renewal you certify at least five retail or wholesale sales in the past licensing year. ITD checks it starting July 1, 2026, and falling short is grounds to deny renewal.
How the class works
Each lesson is written and narrated in English and Spanish, with your place saved automatically. There are no quizzes between lessons.
The exam comes after the last lesson: 15 questions, pass with 12, up to three attempts, no time limit. When you pass, we email your certificate and notify ITD.
